For our first Blog subject, the Billie Girls have decided to share with you one of their guilty pleasures: the Cupcakes. Therefore, we will take you to the Petits Gâteaux store on Mont-Royal Street. It is a playful place evoking both the glazed cake of children’s birthday parties and a retro diner of the 50’s.

When you get near the window where all these marvels so carefully decorated are exposed, you would want to become a kid again, to play, to dress up and give free rein to the sugar-addict in you and stuff in your face all the flavors offered in the display (fortunately there are also mini size cakes) .

Although their appearance dates from the middle of the century, cupcakes regained a major popularity in 2003 tanks to the famous Magnolia Bakery in West Village in New York which has put them back to date. But the small Anglo-Saxon origin cake would win the heart and stomach of fashionistas around the world following the showing of an episode of the popular series SEX IN THE CITY where we see Carrie Bradshaw and Miranda stuff themselves with lilac icing cupcakes from Magnolia. Immediately the now famous cupcake was in all fashion magazines, from Vogue to Nylon, a trend was born.

The cupcake, with its decadent and colorful appearance seems to take its roots directly from the Rococo era. All that sugar icing, edible confetti and sometimes even small decorative animals reminds us of the extravagant dress of Marie-Antoinette and her court, as the cream on cupcakes is like a replica of the wigs of that time.
